Alumni of the SWAT Laboratory

HISTORY

July 1, 1974, marked the beginning of a new Soil and Water Testing Laboratory under the administration of the Agronomy Department.  Andrew Lee Bristol was made the Manager of the Laboratory and Randy Gledhill was his assistant.  Very quickly, Bruce Franzen was hired as student help.  The growth of the workload increased during the first six months.  Later in the year Phil Hibner was hired also as student help.  (Phil Hibner is now the Extension Agent in Luna County.)

The Laboratory has always operated within the income that it collects from payment for services rendered.  The first fiscal year's income was approximately $35,000.  The growth of the Laboratory has been continuous, with sudden surges of activity.  In 1989, the Laboratory became a significant arm of Waste-management Education and Research Consortium (WERC).  WERC renamed the Laboratory as Soil, Water and Air Testing (SWAT).  In 1994, the SWAT Lab began working with the New Mexico Environment Department, Drinking Water and Community Services Bureau, by contract, to do water analyses required by the Safe Drinking Water Act.  Today, the Laboratory has an annual income in excess of $700,000 and an equipment inventory worth over one million dollars.

We feel it is important to recognize the people that have contributed to the growth of this organization.  We are looking for those that have worked for the lab in the past.  Please contact Andrew Bristol abristol@nmsu.edu if you can give contact information on any past employee.  Some are listed on the following pages.  The following links are divided into four historical periods (The Beginning Period, The Basic Growth Period, The WERC Involvement Period, the Accredited and Certified Lab Period, and the New Management Period).
